Who evaluates the future teachers? Perceptions from the internship reports

Abstract

This article is part of a wider reflection on initial teacher education. The motto of this article is related to the identification of the scientific areas that are privileged in the juries of the (required by law) public defences of the internship report, in the last year of the Master's Degree in Teaching in the 1st cycle of Basic Education and of Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd cycle of Basic Education, considering the doctorate and the research domains of the arguers. Through the information made available on the websites of the Portuguese Higher Education institutions that include this master's degree in their education offer, it was possible to gather a sample of forty subjects, going back to the exams that took place in 2020 at the latest, and up to the present time (2023). The data collected allow us to see that there is a preponderance of the teaching area in terms of the doctorates of the principal jurors invited to the aforementioned public examinations, as well as no representation of the cultural, social and ethical area, alluding to the terminology provided for in the legislation in force. Furthermore, a certain tendency towards the disciplinarisation of the master's degree becomes evident, by the consideration of arguers with research linked to the areas of Portuguese or History (sometimes to their teaching), but no specialist in what concerns the 1st cycle of Basic Education. In the end, it is assumed that this may be just the beginning, an exploratory analysis, for further research linked to the theme or its derivations.
