Social representations of teachers in training related to freedom of expression and their teaching

Abstract

The present study investigates the social representations about freedom of expression of Social Sciences teachers in initial training. The subject of freedom of expression is treated as a socially alive issue. Social Sciences teachers must develop certain critical capacities related to freedom of opinion and information, within limits of respect for plurality and human dignity, as an essential aspect in education for a democratic citizenship. The study is carried out in the context of a private university in Santiago de Chile. This is qualitative research with different research tools. Two of these instruments are a questionnaire with diverse activities and the biographical narrative. Regarding the research problem, it is important to deepen in how the participants of the research understand and put into practice (pedagogical and social) the freedom of expression, not only as future teachers, but also as citizens. It is relevant to know how this future Social Sciences teachers are being trained, in terms of Human Rights and education for democratic citizenship. It also delves into the life experiences of participants, regarding their positive and negative experiences on freedom of expression.
