Abstract

The creation of the Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union in 1952, and of EUROGEO, the European Association of Geographers, in 1979, has enabled international collaboration among geography education scholars for several decades and, consequently, the exchange, dissemination, and innovation of ideas, concepts, and methods for teaching geography and an increasingly integrated world shaped by territorial globalisation processes: political, economic, social, and cultural.

Despite the strong influence of Anglo-Saxon geography on scientific production in the discipline, across all its subfields, the strict constraints imposed by curricular frameworks and the routines of national geographical societies have meant that geographical education requires intense dialogue among different cultural traditions regarding what to teach and how to teach geography in primary and, especially, secondary education. It is therefore no coincidence that the Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union is one of the largest and most diverse among the IGU’s forty-seven commissions; nor that EUROGEO emerged as a joint initiative of university and secondary school teachers; nor that geographical education is currently one of its main areas of activity.

The significant Hispanic presence in both organisations has contributed to fostering this interaction among different approaches to geographical education, whose collective subconscious is rooted in the various languages used as media of instruction—most notably English and Spanish, as the principal global native languages (along with Chinese).
