Gender perspectives and student hate speech through the perspective of Chilean. Case study

Abstract

The present investigation deals with a little explored topic that is related to hate speech from a gender perspective. Mainly, it refers to investigate from the conceptions of teachers of history, geography and social sciences around the processes of teaching practices, as well as from the relationships and perceptions that students have, emphasizing the presence of those narratives that express hate from gender perspectives. The methodology is organized under the quantitative paradigm with a case study design, abandoning information generalization purposes. The sample is made up of 80 Chilean history and social sciences professors selected under intentional criteria based on the characteristics of the participants in relation to the study objectives. In addition, a non-probabilistic convenience sampling was carried out. A survey-type instrument was applied and analyzed under non-parametric statistical tests. Among the main conclusions, we can affirm the presence of hate speech that highlights gender inequalities in the classroom. Such narratives are issued, mainly, by the teachers and they extract them mostly from social networks. However, there is interest from them to combat such expressions, as well as from teachers to have tools and spaces to fight against such expressions.
